JUST FOR FUN - GRADUATION ADDRESS
I addressed the University of Hawaii, William S. Richardson School of Law Class of 2018 at their Graduation Ceremony on Sunday. 'Condensed years of "experience" into 2 mins, 54 secs! 'Sharing what I said, below:
Members of the Class of 2018, as I look out at your faces it is all so very clear to me. For all of your expressions of appreciation for the work that I did with you, ours was not a one-way street: YOU enriched my life. I’ve missed working with you more than you can know. Further, I am but one of your Advisors and Counselors – you’ve had many. They are seated here on stage and in the audience. I deserve no special recognition.
That said, your invitation to participate in today’s ceremony is a tremendous honor and I am humbled beyond words to stand here at this Podium. Speakers at Law School Graduations are usually Justices, Judges, Scholars and Luminaries. I don't come close to having such stature. I'm just a Realtor. But, today is not about me.
Today of course, is All About You. Today is your day to reflect on your individual journeys and on those who have helped you along the way. Today is your day to celebrate your achievement with those who love you the most. Today is most deservedly, All About You ... with an asterisk.
Why the asterisk?
Starting tomorrow, “It’s All About THEM.” Who’s them? “Them” will be your spouse, your children, your colleagues, your clients, your friends, your community and your country.
Starting tomorrow, and for each and every day thereafter for the remainder of your natural lives - focus on, and devote yourselves to serving and caring for the needs of others.
Starting tomorrow, place others ahead of yourself.
Do so and your life will be enriched.
Do so and you will have lived the life of the Richardson Lawyer.
JOURNAL RESPONSES
Excerpts from Journal Responses which were sent in reply to Journals submitted by University of Hawai‘i School of Law students serving academic Externships in various venues in and about Hawai‘i, and elsewhere are included hereinbelow. They are segregated into academic years: Fall-Spring-Summer for each Semester that I served as Director of the Externship Program.
All Journal Responses are anonymous and harvested from my book, "Imposed Wisdom." Just for fun, check it out. You'll get a pretty accurate picture of who I am, what I value and treasure about my years at Richardson and which carry on into the future. In addition, see "Lessons Learned" and "Top Eighteen" for more reflections on ten (10) awesome years at the Law School. Slightly tongue in cheek and supported by great respect.
